From 16 November 2026, Immigration New Zealand will extend Post-Study Work Visa eligibility to a specific group of graduates who complete an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma and also hold a bachelor’s degree. The bachelor’s degree may have been completed in New Zealand or overseas.

Main eligibility requirements

INZ says applicants under this new pathway must:

  • Have completed a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7.
  • Have studied full-time in New Zealand for the full duration of that qualification.
  • Have been enrolled in the qualification for its full duration; cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning is not eligible for this pathway.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree completed in New Zealand or overseas. INZ says there is no time limit on when that degree was awarded.

How long could the visa last?

Under this new pathway, a Post-Study Work Visa may be issued for the length of time the graduate spent studying the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year. Other Post-Study Work Visa pathways have their own qualification and duration rules.

What documents may be needed?

INZ says applicants will need evidence of the Graduate Diploma and their bachelor’s degree, including a bachelor’s degree certificate showing the qualification type and awarding institution, as well as an official academic transcript. Additional requirements may apply based on the individual’s circumstances.

Important points to remember

  • This change is not an automatic visa grant; all requirements must be met.
  • Applicants who have already held a Post-Study Work Visa are generally not eligible for a second one.
  • Students should verify their programme, study duration and documents against the latest official guidance before relying on this pathway.

Planning your study-to-work pathway

Before choosing a New Zealand qualification, consider its level, duration and possible post-study options. IRM Global can help prospective students understand study planning and document preparation, but final eligibility is determined under INZ rules.
