New Zealand Student Visa Applicants: Apply at Least Three Months Before Travel

NZL student VIsa Application

Last updated: 28 October 2026

Students planning to study in New Zealand should build visa preparation into their study timeline. Immigration New Zealand recommends applying for a student visa at least three months before the intended travel date, where possible.

Why should students apply early?

INZ reported that it had received approximately 20% more student visa applications year-to-date in 2026 than during the same period in 2025. Application volumes can rise before major intakes, and some applications require additional verification. Processing times vary by application and are not guaranteed.

INZ specifically advises applicants from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to be particularly mindful of early applications because application volumes from these markets are higher and processing can take longer, especially before major student intakes.

Can you apply before all documents are final?

INZ says applicants outside New Zealand may be able to apply using a conditional Offer of Place while an education provider finalises enrolment requirements. An unconditional Offer of Place is required before a visa can be granted. Applicants should confirm their situation with their provider and follow the latest INZ instructions.

Student visa preparation checklist

  • Obtain an Offer of Place from an eligible education provider.
  • Prepare evidence of funds and how tuition and living costs will be covered.
  • Collect academic records, identity documents and any required health or character evidence.
  • Ensure information is accurate, consistent and supported by genuine documents.
  • Check current published visa wait times and apply as early as practical.
  • Respond promptly if INZ requests further information.

What if your course start date is approaching?

If a visa decision may not arrive before your intended start date, contact your education provider promptly to discuss available options, including whether deferral to a later intake may be appropriate. Travel bookings do not guarantee priority processing.
