Skills Assessment Requirement
Unless you are exempt in very limited circumstances, you are required to have a positive Skills Assessment to apply for the visas listed above.
Skills Assessment authority for Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria:
- Three Programs for skills assessment with TRA.
- Program A- Offshore Skills Assessment (OSAP)
- If your passport is on this OSAP Nominated Occupation and Country list next to your occupation you must apply through OSAP. If your passport is not on this list, apply through Program B or C.
- OSAP Pathway 1– for applicants who do not hold an Australian qualification in their trade but hold a qualification which is equivalent to an AQF cert
- OSAP Pathway 2 – for applicants who hold:
- a relevant Australian qualification, or
- a current identified Australian occupational licence
- To be eligible to apply for the skills assessment program, you must be able to show you have completed full-time paid employment in your nominated occupation, or an occupation that is directly related to your nominated occupation.
- Program B Migration Skills Assessment
- You must have a qualification directly related to your nominated occupation (i.e. Aeroskills Training or an Engineering Degree) or at least 3 years of relevant experience
- If you have obtained a qualification internationally or an Australian qualification that was not through the Australian Recognition of Learning process, you are required to demonstrate 3 years full time or equivalent post-qualification experience
- If you have obtained an Australian qualification issued through the Australian Recognition of Learning process, you are required to demonstrate 3 years full-time or equivalent post-qualification experience OR 6 years full-time or equivalent experience which can be either pre- or post-qualification
- Pathway B- Temporary Skills Shortage Skills Assessment
- For applicants who require a skills assessment to apply for the Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482)
- Program A- Offshore Skills Assessment (OSAP)

- dismantling, inspecting, testing, repairing and reassembling aircraft engines, ancillary motors and engine accessories, electrical systems, and subassemblies of aircraft frames
- installing electrical circuits and equipment
- testing aircraft communication equipment, aircraft instrumentation and electronic systems using electronic testing equipment and specialised test apparatus
- replacing and testing aircraft oxygen system components
- assembling parts and subassemblies of aircraft frames
- conducting routine pre-flight inspections of engines, aircraft frames and mechanical systems
- maintaining records of action taken
- may manufacture aircraft electrical, instrument and radio hardware components

Subclass 190 visa– Skilled Nominated Visa & Subclass 491 visa – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa
To apply for visa subclass 190 and visa subclass 491, you need to have a nomination from the state/territory government where you want to live and work. Each State and Territory have individual requirements that must be met in order to receive nomination. (See below)
While the 190 visa is a permanent visa, subclass 491 visa gives you right to live and work in regional Australia for 5 years with a pathway to permanent residency through the subclass 191 visa.
Another difference between the 190 and 491 visa is that you can only apply for visa subclass 491 if you are living and working in regional areas in Australia, while it is not a requirement if you are applying for the 190 visa.
In summary, to be eligible for 190 visa, you need to meet the following criteria:

482 SID visa – Skills In Demand visa- Core Skills Pathway
The 482 SID visa (Core Skills Pathway) visa that requires a sponsorship from an Australian employer. You must be nominated to work in an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). This visa allows to your live and work in Australia for up to 4 years. You may apply for as many 482 visas as you want, as long as the employer is willing to sponsor you. The SID 482 visa has a pathway to permanent residency through the 186 transition stream.

There is no age requirement for this visa.
